Art Deco was a hug design movement that boomed between the two World Wars, from about 1925 until the end of the Great Depression. It primary spread between the US, England and France, as well as the respective colonies. Art Deco furniture was a symbol of Modernism especially in India, Australia and the French Caribbean.
Art Deco furnishings included a myriad of elements derived from the artistic movements of the early 20th C, including Art Nouveau, BauHaus, Cubism and Futurism; however, unlike these movements, it lacked any intentions. Art Deco didn’t have any political or philosophical platform; it was purely decorative art, hence the name: Art Deco.
While the influences and design of Art Deco sensibilities included architecture, fashion and automobile design, the greatest legacy left is in the world of Art Deco furniture. American and French Art Deco is practical. The furniture incorporates mathematical and geometric forms which herald the modern, mechanical age of the early 20th Century, but it also echoes the ancient lines of Africa, Egypt and the Greeks. When combined, the furniture had a certain modern grace that people still identify with today.
Despite the short lived nature of Art Deco as an aesthetic interest, spanning only fifteen years or so, there was a great resurgence of interest in the 1960’s and 70’s, and then again now, at the beginning of the 21st C. Today, vintage collectible Art Deco furnishings are in high demand. Many antique dealers focus primarily on Art Deco furniture, because they know that a collection of original and reproductions will keep their wallets padded.
